Cooinda Lodge Kakadu is a village-style resort that provides a comprehensive range of facilities designed to support both comfort and remote tourism within Kakadu National Park. Set beneath a canopy of trees adjacent to Yellow Water Billabong, the lodge offers a mix of accommodation options including hotel-style rooms, glamping tents, and villas, all equipped with essential amenities such as air conditioning, ensuite or shared facilities, and outdoor verandas.

Central to the lodge are its communal and recreational facilities, including two shaded swimming pools, restaurants, bars, and casual dining options that cater to a range of visitors. A general store and fuel station provide essential supplies for travellers exploring the region, reinforcing the lodge’s role as a key service hub within the park.

The site also includes practical infrastructure such as laundry facilities, a tour desk, campground areas, and transport connections including an airstrip and tour bus access. Its proximity to major attractions, particularly Yellow Water Cruises and the Warradjan Cultural Centre, positions the lodge as a central base for exploring Kakadu’s natural and cultural landscapes. Bamurru Plains Lodge is a remote luxury wilderness camp located on the Mary River floodplains, adjacent to Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory. Set within approximately 300 square kilometres of private land, the lodge offers an immersive experience in one of Australia’s most unique ecosystems, combining environmental sensitivity with high-end hospitality. The project is underpinned by a “Wild Bush Luxury” vision, balancing guest comfort with a strong and direct connection to nature.

Accommodation includes ten safari-style bungalows, a Kingfisher Suite, and the Jabiru Retreat, all elevated and designed with mesh walls to maximise views and natural ventilation. This approach minimises barriers between guests and the landscape while maintaining comfort through ensuite bathrooms, quality bedding, and passive cooling strategies.

A central communal hub provides dining, a bar, library, and an infinity pool overlooking the floodplain. The lodge operates with a low-impact model, generating most of its energy through solar power, managing water use carefully, and limiting technology to prioritise the natural environment. Following an assessment of several potential locations, Sitzler elected to consolidate its operations at Pruen Road, where it currently occupies three adjoining sites. The proposed development involves the amalgamation of Lots 98 and 100, demolition of the existing structure on Lot 98 to enable a new build, followed by the decanting and subsequent demolition of Lot 100.

The new headquarters will provide approximately 1,600m² of high-quality, secure office accommodation, incorporating both public and staff areas within a high-security environment. The design features 3.5-metre-high, double-glazed, shaded façade walls arranged around a central shaded courtyard, which is retained within the demolition footprint.

The site planning incorporates separate truck and vehicle access points, shaded parking, and high-quality landscaped surrounds. Internally, the building will deliver a premium fitout that showcases Sitzler’s capabilities while providing staff with flexible, engaging, and high-performance work environments.

Across the architecture and interiors sector, we’re seeing a surge in AI-generated concepts promising speed, efficiency, and “good design” at scale. But look closely and a pattern emerges: the same furniture families, the same palettes, the same spatial tropes, repeated, refined, and redistributed. Style, it seems, is becoming a dataset.

At Bennett Architecture, where interior design is fundamentally about crafting identity, whether for a workplace, a cultural institution, or a home, this raises a critical question: can AI meaningfully replace the nuanced, often intangible dialogue between designer and client?

Because that conversation is where the real brief lives.

It’s rarely linear. Clients don’t just describe what they want, they reveal it over time. Through stories, contradictions, aspirations. A workplace might say it needs collaboration spaces, but what it actually needs is psychological safety. A home might ‘ask’ for minimalism, but what it really seeks is calm, memory, or belonging. These are not prompts, they’re human conditions.

AI struggles here.

We’re already seeing where it falls short:

AI-generated interiors that over-index on trend data, producing visually polished but culturally generic outcomes.
Layouts that ignore behavioural nuance, how people ‘actually’ move, gather, retreat, and adapt over time.
Material and furniture selections that are technically coherent but lack narrative or meaning.
Designs that fail in real-world constraints, budget, procurement, durability, or climate responsiveness.

In practice, this leads to a kind of “design déjà vu” spaces that look resolved but feel unconvincing.

There’s also a deeper risk. When AI tools are trained on existing visual precedents, they inherently reinforce dominant aesthetics. Minority perspectives, emerging cultural expressions, and highly localised identities are underrepresented, meaning the more we rely on AI, the narrower the design language can become.

This isn’t to dismiss AI. Used well, it’s a powerful tool for iteration, testing, and productivity. It can accelerate early-stage exploration and free designers from repetitive tasks.

But interior design is not a repetition problem.

It is an interpretation problem.

And interpretation requires judgement, empathy, and trust, qualities built through conversation, not computation.

The future of design isn’t AI versus human. It’s about where we draw the line.

If AI handles the predictable, then designers must double down on the unpredictable, the human layer. The part that listens carefully, challenges assumptions, and translates identity into space.

Because in the end, the most successful interiors aren’t the ones that look right.

They’re the ones that feel true.

Larrakia Cultural Centre – Designing gallery Landscapes

The Larrakia Cultural Centre offers a compelling case study in how cultural institutions are evolving, from places that ‘display’ knowledge to places that ‘embody’ it.

What stands out is not just the outcome, but the process. The project repositions Traditional Owners from consultees to decision-makers, with the Larrakia community shaping everything from spatial sequencing to ecological narratives. This level of governance challenges conventional gallery models and demands longer, more iterative engagement, but the result is far more authentic and resilient.

There are clear parallels emerging across the gallery sector. Institutions are moving away from static exhibition models toward immersive, landscape-led experiences that prioritise storytelling, movement, and sensory engagement. At Larrakia, the site itself becomes the narrative, guiding visitors through savannah, monsoon forest, freshwater and coastal systems as a lived expression of Country.

Key learnings for practitioners:

Cultural authority must sit at the centre of governance, not at the edge of consultation.
Landscape and public realm are no longer supporting elements, they are primary storytelling devices.
Successful visitor engagement is layered: physical experience, interpretation, and participation working together.
Designing for dual audiences (community + visitors) requires clear spatial and cultural boundaries.

Perhaps most importantly, the project reinforces that meaningful engagement with visitors starts with meaningful engagement with custodians. When that foundation is strong, the visitor experience becomes deeper, more educational, and more memorable.

As galleries and cultural institutions continue to evolve, projects like this set a new benchmark, one where design excellence is inseparable from cultural integrity.

Bennett Architecture delivered the design for Team HEALTH's assisted living development in Malak, a non-clinical mental health facility known as Top End House. The project reflects a deep understanding of people-focused environments that promote independence, wellbeing, and cultural sensitivity. Designed for rehabilitation and transition, the facility supports patients returning from clinical care to community living, with many residents coming from remote Aboriginal communities.

The masterplan prioritises safety, accessibility, and connection. Independent living units for high-care residents are complemented by communal lounges, games areas, and purpose-built vegetable gardens that encourage sustainability and provide residents with a nurturing role. Expansive landscaped gardens create zones for private contemplation, exercise, and group activities, while a central gazebo offers a focal point for social gatherings. Planting strategies ensure visibility and security, combining low ground cover with taller shade trees for cooling and comfort.

The facility includes administration offices, treatment spaces, staff accommodation, a central lounge and kitchen, laundry and craft areas, group bedrooms, and individual units. A graduated design approach supports re-learning and independence, with 24-hour mentor and clinical support available on-site.

Delivered through extensive cultural consultation and stakeholder engagement, the design process involved site visits, 3D visualisations, and public feedback to refine the brief. Despite community opposition during planning, the project demonstrates Bennett Architecture’s ability to manage complex stakeholder relationships and deliver culturally responsive, functional environments. With a site area of 4,400 m² and a construction value of $4.37M, Top End House stands as a benchmark for integrated mental health design in the Northern Territory.

The Frank McEllister Community Park included the detail design and documentation of the major regional park in Alice Springs. The concept plan had been completed for Alice Springs Town Council (ASTC) by another firm. We reviewed the conceptual design, and using our knowledge of how Territorians play and socialise, we improved the ideas and materials to fit the social, economic and maintenance realities better suited Alice Springs Town Council and the community. The way we approach our projects is methodical with check points to ensure the scope of works is within the required needs for the project, the community is being engaged and informing the project needs and the budget is being monitored to avoid costly rework. For the Frank McEllister Community Park project, we engaged with ASTC and the community directly via stakeholder meetings and online surveys. We were able to capture valuable insights from a wide cross section of the community and ensured the community received the feedback to their comments, by posting the detail design and 3D images before the project was progressed to final documentation. Our clear communication strategy with Council through the phases of the project, guided the understanding of the issues, strengths and weaknesses of the design and facilitated design changes at critical times in the design development and documentation. It also gave Council a week-by-week status of how the project was progressing and dual management of the program to gain the best outcomes for the project

The Katherine Town Master Plan identified the civic park was a major location in the town streetscape, but the space was underutilised because it lacked shade and amenity. Bennett Architectures Landscape Architects redesigned the space to become a large, shaded plaza, that could accommodate many of the town’s events throughout the calendar year. The public space is supported with mature trees, misters for cooling, a stage, kiosk, seating options and with festoon lighting and projection art for nighttime drama. The project was difficult to deliver in the requirement to coordinate the landscape services in and around the existing services running below the plaza space. The constructed tree pits were large and fit in among the service mains to ensure the growth of the trees and their maturation to form the leafy canopy above the festoon lighting frame. Bennett Architecture was engaged to develop the concept design for the public space upgrade, document the scope of hard and soft landscape works and assist with the construction phase of the works. The Mayor of Katherine and the public now program the space with NADOC week, Christmas and show day functions as well as movie nights in the dry season which brings the whole community together.

The elevated pool zone forms the centrepiece of the scheme, comprising three refined aboveground pools set within generous, universally accessible deck surrounds. These spaces are unified by contemporary glass balustrades that preserve uninterrupted views to the Darwin cityscape, reinforcing a sense of openness and resort-style luxury.

The design adopts a range of sustainable strategies to improve long-term performance and user comfort. Durable, low-maintenance materials with high recycled content and proven resistance to tropical conditions are prioritised, reducing lifecycle costs and environmental impact. To mitigate climate change effects and reduce heat load, the deck incorporates light-coloured, high solar reflectance paving, permeable surfaces where feasible, and extensive planting to cool the microclimate through evapotranspiration. Shade is introduced through a combination of strategically located lightweight structures, pergolas, and canopy trees, providing relief from sun exposure while remaining practical and cost-effective.

A network of diverse social spaces is distributed across the podium, including informal seating clusters, quiet retreat zones, and larger gathering areas. When everyone in the family can relax and play together you know you have designed a facility that is loved and will have repeat use over the years.

We worked with City of Darwin’s Recreation and Maintenance teams to design an all-abilities park within the Jingili Water Gardens. The design process included consultations with recreation staff, artists, Council Engineers, our consulting Engineers, Parks maintenance staff and suppliers. We worked through a logical design process from concept design to tender documentation. We surveyed the space to determine the fit and function of the space within the overall park surround, for mobility access, location of all abilities change rooms and ablutions and for stormwater management. Once these items were resolved and located in the park environment, we could then design the play space.

The play space includes play elements – bespoke play items, water play, specific experience equipment, shade, seating, nature play, services, pathways, surface materials, zoning for passive and active play, scale for small, medium and large groups to play in the same place, drinking fountains, bins, picnic facilities, lighting and planting. We designed these elements to ensure all users could experience running, jumping, spinning, bouncing, crawling, climbing, balancing, sensory touch and feel, heights, springing and discovery play. In amongst these activities, we put seating and landscape to subtly divide spaces, facilitate carers watching play and add play materials.

The design delivers a functional and culturally sensitive environment through a linear floor arrangement that optimises circulation and departmental grouping. The layout incorporates private offices, open-plan workstations, meeting rooms, and breakout spaces to support collaboration, privacy, and staff wellbeing. Informal gathering areas and amenities encourage social interaction and foster a positive workplace culture.

Materiality and colour palette were inspired by the surrounding landscape, drawing on the ochre tones of local Porcellanite rock and the green hues of gum tree foliage. This connection to country is further reinforced through a bespoke feature: perforated timber wall panels showcasing a pattern designed by local Indigenous artist Homere Wosomo (Lily). This element celebrates cultural identity and creates a striking backdrop for Catholic Care NT’s services.

Bennett Architecture’s Landscape Architect master planned the Cullen Bay Marina Revitalisation, enabling federal funding for phased implementation. The design upgraded urban character, improved amenities, and enhanced comfort to attract businesses and visitors. The revitalisation boosted visitor numbers, filled vacant shops, and re-established Cullen Bay as a vibrant, family-friendly destination programmed with regular events for locals and tourists.

Our Landscape Architect Fiona Eddleston originally master planned the Cullen Bay Marina Revitalisation in consultation with the CBMMC board and stakeholders.

From this master plan, the CBMMC and City of Darwin was able to attract federal funding for the implementation of the works in phases. The goal for the urban design revitalisation was to upgrade the urban character, attract businesses to the precinct, increase amenities and to improve the comfort level and wellbeing of people in this public space. The delivery of the project included extensive survey and ground truthing to ensure existing services, fixtures and features could be incorporated into a more modern design. Street trees included constructed tree pits to ensure root growth for trees and vines. The enhanced lighting also adds to the activation of the spaces at night for diners and holiday makers staying in the surrounding accommodation. The project deliverables included the master planning of the precinct. Jez Clerk Architects developed the concept designs and then we worked the Jez to document the works for tender.

The whole precinct has lifted in terms of visitor numbers and new businesses have filled the previously empty commercial shops. The urban public space is programmed with events from Fridays through to Sunday and Cullen Bay has retained its status as a family destination for locals and visitors.

Staff and patient respite spaces are distributed throughout the building, offering quiet areas for reflection and recovery, essential in high-demand healthcare environments.

Cultural relevance and local character are embedded in the material palette and spatial layout, creating a strong sense of place. A central courtyard provides a calming outdoor retreat for patients and staff, reinforcing the clinic’s commitment to wellbeing. The design accommodates five major divisions, including consultation offices, training areas, therapy spaces, mental health services, and a children’s day care with play facilities.

With a total construction area of 1,532 m² and dedicated parking for 201 vehicles, including 10 accessible bays, the Palmerston Super Clinic sets a benchmark for integrated healthcare design. Recognised for its excellence, the project received the Special Projects and Public Buildings Award at the Building Designers Association of the NT – Building Design Awards 2010.

Bennett Architecture played a key role in the urban design of The Heights Durack, a premier master-planned community in Palmerston that redefines contemporary tropical living while embracing the unique Territory lifestyle. Spanning more than 50 hectares, the development is planned to accommodate over 400 families and is underpinned by urban design principles that promote economic security, affordability, and long-term resilience. The masterplan supports housing choice and market diversity, enabling residents to enter, remain, and adapt within the community over time, strengthening social and economic stability.

A broad range of housing options was carefully integrated, with lot sizes ranging from compact 300m² parcels to generous 1000m² homesites. Diverse residential typologies, including duplexes and multi-dwelling lots, were incorporated to support affordability, efficient land use, and inclusive living arrangements. This diversity caters to first-home buyers, growing families, downsizers, key workers, and multigenerational households, ensuring the neighbourhood responds to changing demographic needs and life stages.

The masterplan places strong emphasis on green neighbourhoods and environmental performance, with interconnected parks, green corridors, and shaded streets that respond to the tropical climate. These elements enhance urban cooling, support biodiversity, and encourage walking and cycling, while providing high-quality outdoor spaces for recreation and everyday social interaction. The public realm was designed to be legible, walkable, and human-scaled, fostering casual encounters and a strong sense of community engagement.

Safety and security were embedded through principles of passive surveillance, clear sightlines, activated streetscapes, and well-defined public and private spaces. The project proceeded under a design and construct contract with PTM Group, with Bennett Architecture responsible for detailed design and coordination throughout. The Landscape Architects at Bennett Architecture designed and managed the construction of the regional landmark park for a new Palmerston suburb, in Zuccoli. The Regional play space design maximises site amenity and connectivity with the surrounding suburb linking the park to the hike and bike trails. The park includes a tower play structure with over 20+ activities for a multitude of age groups to play together. The amenities also include a double flying fox for people to race each other through the course. The whole play space is set in a treed and garden environment for cooling and connection to nature. For families to stay and play longer there are barbecue, picnic settings, seats and a large, grassed area for informal games.

The playground design was tall and brightly coloured to facilitate it becoming an identity beacon for prospective land purchasers to find the adjoining display homes for the newly minted subdivision. Its proximity to the display homes with managed traffic conditions also allowed children to play while parents walked through the gated and secure environment of the park and homes.

Bennett Architecture worked with the local community to develop the concept plan for the Utopia Sports Facility for Urapuntja Aboriginal Corporation in Arlparra. The design team walked the land and through community stakeholder discussions, created a regional hub for AFL and softball events. The scope of amenities included change rooms, shaded grandstands, and visitor camping facilities sited around the oval shaped, compacted red dirt grounds. The detail design reflected a deep understanding of cultural protocols and sacred sites, and addressed remote construction challenges with robust, low-maintenance, cost-effective structures suited to harsh conditions, supporting community sport and cultural engagement in a sustainable way.

Utopia Sports Facility was designed for the Urapuntja Aboriginal Corporation, located in the Arlparra community. The site serves as a regional hub for sporting events, regularly hosting football and softball carnivals for numerous teams from surrounding areas. Our commission involved delivering new supporting infrastructure for both AFL and softball, including change rooms, shaded grandstands, and visitor camping facilities. A key aspect of the project was reshaping the existing red dirt playing grounds to allow for proper drainage during flood events. We worked closely with the community to identify and protect sacred tree sites, accommodate cultural protocols, and carefully balance the differing requirements of both sporting codes. The building designs needed to respond to the challenges of remote construction. We focused on creating robust, low-maintenance structures that would endure the harsh climate while remaining cost-effective in a region where construction and material costs are significantly higher.

Our landscape design applies principles of inclusion, activation, and respite, offering diverse settings for social interaction, quiet reflection, and connection with nature. Courtyards feature passive seating zones, shaded green areas, and low-key sporting courts for casual games and physical activity. These amenities promote wellbeing by encouraging social engagement and accessible fitness opportunities during downtime. Durable, low-maintenance materials and shade strategies ensure year-round usability in the Territory’s challenging climate.

The redevelopment follows Defence’s rigorous design methodology, progressing through 30% Concept, 50% Schematic, and 90% Detailed Design phases, supported by extensive cultural consultation and stakeholder engagement. Collaborative delivery has involved a nationally distributed team working seamlessly via BIM platforms and Microsoft Teams to meet program milestones despite COVID-related challenges.

Wadeye, formally Port Keats, is a remote township approximately 400km west of Darwin. The vision for the site is to establish a vibrant, modernised town centre that brings together cultural, social, and commercial activity, anchored by a new supermarket and complemented by a variety of retail tenancies. Co located with the historically significant site known as the ‘Chicken Oval’, the masterplan and conceptual designs show a precinct where people gather for amenities, social connection and important meetings.

The precinct includes a fully serviced supermarket with additional bakery, deli, and butchering facilities. There is also a large, cooled warehouse to ensure a volume of stores can be maintained ensuring reliable stored food supply during the wet season. Additional tenancies in the shopping complex are designed to improve economic opportunities in Wadeye including space for a furniture store, hairdresser, and kiosk with active frontage to the adjacent oval. The Family Recreational Centre also forms part of the precinct, featuring a restaurant and bar with outdoor dining and an air-conditioned events space. Bennett Architecture was engaged by Catholic Care Northern Territory (CCNT) to transform and expand an existing social housing development. We worked with the varied team at CCNT to create an integrated masterplan for the whole site to provide housing diversity, connected community and support services for the vulnerable residents. The density, features and The masterplan was designed along nodes with social courtyard gardens. Each accommodation type was orientated to face the main concrete path network. This facilitated social interaction which is further encouraged with the development of open space nodes along the main concrete path. With In these nodes we have included shade structures and picnic tables and fire pits for communal outdoor cooking. We have also facilitated space for small pay/ art events as part of an arts trail and play space network connected to the whole site masterplan for these trails. This was founded on a set of Design principles, These included: the creation of supportive built environments that promote social connection, opportunities for physical and recreational activities, and access to nature. Spaces for spiritual and cultural activity that demonstrate respect for resident’s beliefs, knowledge, religious and cultural needs. Access to a variety of services on-site delivered in appropriate multi-functional facilities to enable supportive social and health environment enabling access for residents to move freely on and off the site whilst maintaining a high level of safety and security. Ease of movement between hubs considers the different use and cohort requirements whilst promoting integration and sharing of amenities. We created a place of home life.
