Alyerre Lodge (Bath Street Lodge), Alice Springs is a short-stay accommodation facility supporting people, particularly First Nations visitors from remote communities, who travel to town to access medical and essential services. Bennett Architecture upgraded the existing hostel-style building to create a safer, more welcoming and dignified environment. Works included a comprehensive interior refresh, improved kitchen and dining facilities, enhanced landscaped outdoor spaces, accessibility and egress compliance upgrades, building code remediation, and a new manager’s unit. The project transformed the ageing facility into a more functional, comfortable and culturally responsive accommodation environment that promotes wellbeing, safety and community connection.

Project Story
Alyerre Lodge in Bath Street, Alice Springs, is a short-stay accommodation facility that supports people, particularly First Nations travellers who need to be away from home to access essential services in town. The lodge functions as a safe, affordable base for visitors attending medical appointments and other service needs, reducing the pressure of travel by providing stable, supported accommodation close to local health and community infrastructure.
Bennett Architecture’s work at the site (documented as the “Bath Street Lodge” project) focused on upgrading an existing hostel-style building to better meet contemporary expectations of dignity, comfort, and compliance. The design approach recognised the lodge’s role as more than shelter: it is a transitional home that must feel welcoming, legible, and calm for people arriving after long journeys, often under stressful circumstances.
The project scope combined practical performance upgrades with a clear improvement to everyday liveability.
Key works included a comprehensive aesthetic refresh throughout, targeted re-planning and improvement of kitchen and dining areas to better support communal use, and enhancements to the landscape and outdoor areas to provide shaded, usable spaces for rest, gathering, and respite. Just as critical were code and safety upgrades—bringing the 1980s-era building fabric up to current standards—along with significant compliance remediation covering accessible design (including disabled access) and safe egress.
A supporting manager’s unit was also incorporated to strengthen on-site oversight and care, reinforcing the lodge’s operational model as a managed accommodation environment.
Overall, Bennett Architecture’s upgrade positions Alyerre Lodge as a more functional, compliant, and humane facility: one that supports health and wellbeing through improved amenity, safer circulation, and more comfortable shared spaces, while respecting the needs of remote visitors seeking culturally safe accommodation
