Project Story
Bennett Architecture’s design for the Yanawal Units at the Rirratjingu Business Centre in Nhulunbuy is conceived as a practical, climate-responsive workplace and accommodation asset that fits the rhythms of a remote township and the character of East Arnhem Land. The scheme prioritises durability and ease of maintenance while still delivering a calm, well-proportioned built form that contributes positively to the Business Centre precinct.
A clear planning logic separates public approach, shared circulation and private rooms, allowing the units to operate efficiently for short and longer stays. Entries are sheltered and legible, supporting everyday use in wet-season downpours and strong sun. Generous verandahs and shaded outdoor thresholds extend internal space, encouraging cross-ventilation and informal gathering without relying solely on mechanical cooling. Openings are placed to capture prevailing breezes while limiting heat gain, with careful attention to privacy, outlook and security.
Materials and detailing are selected for tropical performance: robust claddings, corrosion-resistant fixtures and finishes that tolerate humidity, salt air and heavy use. Deep eaves, controlled glazing and high-level ventilation support comfort, while a restrained palette and repeated elements help the project read as a cohesive set of units rather than a collection of one-offs.
Overall, the Yanawal Units express Bennett Architecture’s commitment to functional clarity, environmental moderation and respectful place-making—delivering straightforward, dependable buildings that support local enterprise at the Rirratjingu Business Centre and provide a welcoming base in Nhulunbuy.
