Bennett Architecture has delivered renal health facilities across the Northern Territory for more than 25 years, supporting remote and regional communities with essential healthcare infrastructure. Completed in 2024, the Wadeye Renal Unit was developed in partnership with the Northern Territory Department of Health and Purple House to provide nurse-assisted dialysis services within the local community. Co-located with the Wadeye Health Centre, the facility improves access to treatment, reducing the need for patients to relocate for care. Designed to be robust, culturally responsive and operationally efficient, the facility supports better health outcomes while enabling patients to remain connected to family, culture and country.

Project Story
Bennett Architecture has provided architectural consultancy services for renal unit developments across the
Northern Territory for over 25 years, delivering projects in remote and regional communities including Papunya,
Mt Liebig, Kaltukatjara, Nightcliff, Katherine, Alice Springs, and most recently the Wadeye Renal Unit completed in
2024 for the Northern Territory Department of Health.
Wadeye was identified as a priority location for the provision of nurse-assisted renal services to support residents
living with chronic kidney disease within their own community. The project involved the design and delivery of a
new standalone renal facility co-located with the existing Wadeye Health Centre at Wadeye NT. The facility was
developed to improve access to dialysis treatment for Territorians, reduce the need for relocation to major regional
centres, and strengthen local healthcare capability through the integration of renal dialysis services.
Drawing on Bennett Architecture’s extensive experience in the planning and delivery of remote healthcare facilities,
the design process focused on creating a robust, culturally appropriate, and operationally efficient facility suited to
the challenging environmental and logistical conditions of remote Northern Territory communities.
Throughout the design and documentation phases, Bennett Architecture worked closely with the Northern Territory
Government Project Officer and Purple House, the nominated operator of the facility. Purple House provided
valuable operational input, specialist renal service requirements, and lessons learned from existing dialysis facilities
across Central Australia and the Northern Territory. This collaborative approach ensured that the design responded
to both clinical requirements and the practical needs of patients, staff, and visiting healthcare professionals.
The completed facility provides a modern and welcoming environment for dialysis treatment, supporting improved
health outcomes and enabling community members to access essential renal care closer to home while remaining
connected to family, culture, and country.
